Visions of the Tokaido Road – Illustrated Talk 🖼️🌧️

Join artist Nigel Caple for an illustrated talk tracing the history and artistic legacy of Japan’s iconic Tokaido Road. The session highlights the work of Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), especially his renowned Fifty‑Three Stations of the Tokaido Road series, including the atmospheric Driving Rain at Shōno. Caple weaves together four centuries of travel, storytelling, and visual culture to illuminate how artists have captured the landscapes, journeys, and dramatic moments along this historic route.

What to expect:

  • 🖌️ A guided exploration of Hiroshige’s woodblock prints and their artistic significance
  • 🛤️ Stories and histories from four centuries of travel along the Tokaido Road
  • 🏛️ A hybrid event at the Ashmolean with both in‑person and online attendance options
