Daniel Sperling: Compassion in Healthcare

Join Professor Daniel Sperling (SJD, BA Philosophy, University of Haifa) for a thought‑provoking Massada Public Seminar examining the role of compassion in healthcare.

While compassion is often seen as a spontaneous humane response to suffering, Sperling argues it is also a core ethical value rooted in human dignity and solidarity. In this talk, he will explore:

  • đź’ˇ Why compassion is vital to patient wellbeing and quality of care
  • ⚖️ How excessive compassion can lead to caregiver distress and “compassion fatigue”
  • 🧠 Why compassion is more than an emotional reaction — and how it connects to broader ethical principles
  • 🩺 Why it is sometimes absent in healthcare, and what can be done to foster it

The presentation will be followed by discussion and drinks.
